UV Absorbers & HALS (KingSorb®)

The KingSorb® range of light stabilisers inhibit photodegradation of polymers. When exposed to UV radiation, chemical bonds within the polymer can break to release highly reactive radicals. UV absorbers and HALS can work synergistically to provide optimal stabilisation of the polymer.

Issues caused by photodegradation of polymers include:

  • Discolouration
  • Polymer chain breaking
  • Chalking
  • Loss of physical properties
  • Loss of mechanical properties.


UV Absorbers

UV absorbers work by preventing initial degradation altogether. This is done by absorbing higher energy UV rays and dissipating this as lower energy heat which does not damage the plastic.


Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers (HALS)

HALS work by preventing polymer degradation where photo-oxidation has already produced free radicals. Hindered amine light stabilisers form nitroxide radicals, which react and remove hyperoxide radical species produced by UV exposure.

Talc (Magsil®)

Talc is a natural mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate, that is soft, non-abrasive and inert in nature. The Magsil® products are offered in a range of specifications according to particle size, purity and brightness.

Commonly known as dusting powder, this silicate mineral is also a key functional filler in many industries. As a filler, these products not only enhance the overall quality of your products but create cost effective formulations.

Barite (Supreme®, Microsupreme®, Ambar® and Sintabar®)

Barium sulfate is natural mineral that holds a unique balance of high specific gravity with low hardness and virtual chemical inertness.

The Supreme® and Microsupreme® ranges offer natural white and tightly controlled milled grades. The Sintabar® range offers finer, high whiteness and precipitated barium sulfate grades. And finally, the Ambar® range are natural off-white, coarser grades.

This mineral is key functional filler in adhesives & sealants, composites, plastics, refractories, inks, oil, gas & petrochemical. In particualr within the coatings and plastics industries.

Antioxidant Additives (KingFos® and KingNox®)

The KingFos® and KingNox® ranges of antioxidants are designed to protect polymers against thermal degradation. Oxidation of polymers can cause a loss mechanical strength, flexibility, gloss and colour. So additives inhibit oxidation through primary, secondary and synergistic antioxidants are essential to extending the products life span.

Types of antioxidants:

  • Primary antioxidants, also known as ‘chain-breaking antioxidants’, work through a mechanism of scavenging radicals. These radicals evolve when the polymer is subjected to high temperatures and high shear stress.
     
  • Secondary antioxidants reacting and removing organic hyperoxides to produce non-radical products. The products are commonly used conjunction with primary antioxidants.
